✝️ Seeking Answers Together – Q&A
National Day of Prayer Unity Dinner • May 7, 2026
(Content drawn directly from the uploaded transcript)
Why Are There So Many Denominations?
Christians share one Lord, yet worship in many different traditions. Pastor William Coker explained that denominational differences are like different flavors of ice cream:
“Some are vanilla, some are chocolate, some are rocky road… while different, we all sit down at the same table.”
Despite differences, Christians share core beliefs:
God as Creator
Jesus Christ’s birth, death, resurrection, and return
The Holy Spirit
Forgiveness of sins
Resurrection and final judgment
These shared foundations make denominational differences secondary.
Is Denominational Diversity a Problem?
Not inherently. Scripture acknowledges differences:
“There have to be differences among you…” (1 Corinthians 11:19)
The real issue is division, not diversity. Pastor Coker emphasized Unity over Uniformity — unity does not require sameness.
“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).
“The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part.” (1 Corinthians 12:12-14)
“But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.” (1 Corinthians 12:18)

What Does Scripture Teach About Unity?
The transcript highlights several passages:
“One Lord, one faith, one baptism.” (Ephesians 4:5)
“That all of them may be one…” (John 17:21)
“Be perfectly united in mind and thought.” (1 Corinthians 1:10)
Why is Unity so Important
Unity is both a command and a witness to the world.
Believers are called to Unity—such as being one just as the Father and Son are one (John 17:22) -mirroring the relational harmony within the Godhead itself - reflecting the divine nature of God by reflecting the Trinity.
Jesus prayed for believers to be One - "so that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:21). Unity proves Christ's message, love, and serves as a powerful witness to the world so that others may believe in Jesus.
